Date Sold 2/25/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Sullivan's Travels, the classic 1941 Preston Sturges movie acting comedy ("Veronica Lake's on the take"; "Written and Directed by Preston Sturges"; about a Hollywood director who pretends to be a hobo in order to make a more realistic movie about the troubles of the poor, but he comes to realize that they don't want to see such a movie, and that they just want to get their mind off their troubles) starring Joel McCrea (in the title role as John Lloyd Sullivan), Veronica Lake, Robert Warwick, William Demarest, Margaret Hayes, Porter Hall, Franklin Pangborn, Eric Blore, and Esther Howard. Note that Veronica Lake was far along in her pregnancy (six months) when she signed to do this movie, but she was able to hide that fact from Preston Sturges. But as filming continued, it became painfully obvious, and Sturges became furious, but all he could do was "shoot around it", and part of the way this was done was by having her dress in baggy "men's" tramp clothes, which hid her figure, but which reduced her sex appeal considerably! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is certainly THE best Veronica Lake lobby card there is, with a wonderful sexy image of her, and of course, it is from Preston Sturges' classic movie. We have never auctioned it before! But it has really significant defects (see below), so please bear them in mind before placing a bid on this card. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: fair. The card has a really significant defect, which is that the title area was printed over with black paint and then a French language title was painted in blue paint above it, and the black paint goes over the bottom of the image. There is also a Canadian censor stamp in the middle right of the image, affecting Lake's waist. There are also many pinholes, smudges, and dot stains around the edges, with a tiny tear in the left border. Someone wrote the French language title in the bottom border in pen. I have had experience with cards with this "painted over title" issue, and I know that it is extremely unlikely that a restorer can remove the black paint, because it "bonds in" with the card, and what would remove the black paint would likely remove the ink that was printed below it. A restorer likely can somewhat or greatly lighten the black paint to where you might be able to see what is under it, but it is extremely likely that the only way this could be restored would be to paint over it with what was under it. So please bear this all in mind before placing a bid on this wonderful card! Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
