An Original Vintage Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Sherlock Holmes (also released as "Moriarty"), the 1922 Albert Parker silent detective mystery crime thriller ("Adapted from William Gillette's stage play founded on Sir Conan Doyle's stories") starring John Barrymore (in the title role as Sherlock Holmes), Roland Young (as Dr. Watson), Carol Dempster, Gustav von Seyffertitz (as Professor Moriarty), Reginald Denny, and Louis Wolheim NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that cards from this John Barrymore/Sherlock Holmes movie exist both hand colored and without coloring. We have previously auctioned an example of this card that was not hand colored, and that card sold for $550, while this example is hand colored. Of course, it is a matter of personal opinion, but I think the hand coloring adds a LOT to the card! Note that this is a hand-colored lobby card. In the days of silent movies prior to the invention of good quality full-color printing, studios would have stills and lobby cards printed in black and white and then amazingly would hire women to hand-color the lobby cards one at a time (labor was very cheap at the time)! So, each card is colored slightly differently, and the coloring is never a perfect match, and since it is water color paint, it sometimes "runs", because simple contact with water will remove the paint. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good to very good. There is an indentation and tiny stain in Barrymore's hair just above his forehead (see our image). There are some scuff marks in both men's clothes, with a few in the background to the left of Barrymore's coat. There are some tiny pinholes in the borders. Something was once glued to the back of the card, and there is paper residue on the back of the left of the card, but it does not affect the front. The above defects are truly not very distracting when this great card is looked at straight on, and I would think many collectors could happily display it as is (or certainly, expert restoration could be performed, with or without backing the card).
