Auction History Result 6c682 TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST 5 Spanish/U.S. export LCs '45 Alan Ladd, Brian Donlevy, William Bendix Date Sold 4/7/2016 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 5 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Two Years Before the Mast, the 1946 John Farrow high seas sailor swashbuckling pirate adventure thriller ("The world famous novel on the screen at last!"; "Based on the novel by Richard Henry Dana Jr."; about a man who is shanghaied onto a ship run by a sadistic captain; based on the true story which was turned into a novel by Richard Henry Dana, the man who was shanghaied) starring Alan Ladd, Brian Donlevy (as Richard Henry Dana), William Bendix, Barry Fitzgerald, Howard da Silva, Esther Fernandez, Albert Dekker, Luis Van Rooten, and Darryl Hickman. Note that Esther Fernandez was a popular Mexican actress who had never appeared in an American movie, and could barely speak English. But she was signed to appear in this movie (because they needed a pretty woman in a cast of all rough men), and she made this sole appearance, and then returned to Mexico. However, when this movie was released in an English/Spanish version for Spanish speaking audiences, Fernandez was bumped up to second billing under Alan Ladd! This was likely done to please Latin American audiences who were a major demographic during World War II. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that these lobby cards were printed in the United States for use at theaters with Spanish speaking audiences (this was done most by MGM, starting in the 1930s, but it was done by the other major studios as well, and often the posters would have the exact same image as the English language poster, except the writing would be in Spanish, and on posters from the 1930s and 1940s there would be an added "Toda en Espanol!", meaning "Entirely in Spanish!", printed within the image). Sometimes posters from the 1960s or later will have the word "SPANISH" printed in the bottom border (or sometimes stamped on the back of the poster). Condition: good. All five cards have many faint smudges, stains and pinholes around the edges, with blue and red paint in parts of the borders.
