eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 2c092 ROBERTA insert 1935 Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, great art, ultra rare! Date Sold 12/12/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Roberta, the 1935 William A. Seiter romantic musical comedy ("Jerome Kern's queen of musical romances brought to the screen in a glorious sunburst of song!"; "A heart-load of maddening beauties in gasping gowns... a fortune in furs... a ransom in jewels... in a song-studded romance of Paris in lovetime!"; "Jerome Kern's amazing musical stage success.. Ten times as tantalizing on the screen!"; "The brilliant hit of the music stage... Ten times as tantalizing on the screen!"; "A heart-load of maddening beauties draped in fashion's most ravishing creations... in a dream-drenched story of love time in Paris... told to the magic melodies of Jerome Kern"; "Jerome Kern's glorious musical romance... screened in a heart-warming sunburst of laughter and song... ten times as tantalizing as the sensational stage success!"; "Tingle to these dream-disturbing tunes"; "from the glorious play 'Roberta'"; "Book and Lyrics by Otto Harbach"; about a former Russian Princess who is now a famous Parisian designer, and her partner dies, leaving her half of the business to an American football player, who comes to help run the business, even though he knows nothing about it; Astaire plays a bandleader, and Rogers plays a fake Polish countess who was once Astaire's girlfriend) starring Irene Dunne ("the golden girl with the silver song"), Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers ("America's Dancing Stars"; "The King and Queen of Dance unite in the Empress of Musical Shows!"), Randolph Scott, Helen Westley (in the title role as Roberta), Victor Varconi, Claire Dodd, "and Hollywood's rarest beauties in Oh!... What gorgeous gowns!". Note that this movie was early enough in Astaire & Rogers careers that they are billed under Irene Dunne! Also note that the parts played by Astaire and Rogers were much smaller in the original Broadway production (Astaire's role was played by Bob Hope!), but their parts were expanded for the movie version, and of course, several musical numbers were added. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this insert! Also note that RKO did something very unusual with this insert, which is that they did not include a blank border at the top, but rather had it be a full bleed in that area (meaning that the image goes to the edge of the poster). The poster measures 14" x 36", but was created without a top blank border, so it looks like it might be missing, but it was never there! Also note that most of the posters for this movie have huge images of Irene Dunne, with much smaller images of Astaire and Rogers, but on this great insert, Astaire and Rogers get at least as much of the image as Irene Dunne! Also note that this poster has never been machine folded! Some pre-1970 insert posters were machine folded twice horizontally at the poster exchange, while some were not. It can be difficult to find an unfolded example of many pre-1970 insert posters (note that most post-1970 inserts were NOT machine folded, so they are pretty much only found unfolded, and therefore this does not apply to those inserts). Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had some tears and tiny paper loss around the edges, and someone put three pieces of tape on the back of tears in the left border. There was a 3" tear in the lower right border, extending into the background, that was repaired with tape from the back. There are some stains and smudges in the borders that extend into the background at top left and along the top, and some scuffs in Dunne's cheek and hand at bottom right. Since most of the defects are in the borders, and since the poster was never folded, it can certainly still be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or restoration can be performed. Either way, the new owner will have a wonderful (and scarce) poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
