Date Sold 12/27/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded English Six-Sheet (called a twelve-sheet in England) Movie Poster (6sh; measures 80" x 90" [203 x 229 cm]) (Learn More) Black Friday, the 1940 Arthur Lubin Universal mad scientist crime murder horror thriller (a wild story of a mad scientist, played by Boris Karloff, whose friend is badly injured in a car crash by a gangster who is fatally wounded, and the scientist is able to save his friend by transplanting part of the brain of the dead gangster into his friend's brain!; unfortunately, his friend then takes on both his own personality and that of the dead gangster, and he becomes a "Jekyll & Hyde", and when he is the gangster, he is seeking revenge against his gang members, including Bela Lugosi in a surprisingly minor role!) starring Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Stanley Ridges, Anne Nagel, Anne Gwynne, and James Craig. Note that Universal incredibly deceptively advertised this movie! The movie was pre-sold as a Karloff/Lugosi film even though Lugosi only has a small part. They gave Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi equal top billing, and the one-sheet has large head shots of both stars, and poor Stanley Ridges, who was actually the star of the movie, is not even pictured on the poster, although they found room for an image of Anne Nagel! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this English poster! Note that this poster was almost certainly printed in the very late 1930s or in the early 1940s, at a time when England was undergoing a severe paper shortage (as was most of Europe) due to World War II. So they would take older unused posters, and print new posters on the backs of them! In this particular case, each section of the "Black Friday" poster was printed on the back of the sections of different unknown multi-panel English posters! We have provided images of the back of each section, although of course, the winner of this auction will receive the single "Black Friday" poster (in four sections, which have printing on the back, as shown). Note that this is one of seven English six-sheets and five English three-sheets that we are currently auctioning in 12 separate auctions. The posters were part of an amazing find of such posters that were auctioned in England several years ago. Our consignor purchased these twelve from that auction, and has consigned them to us. It will likely be many years before we again auction ANY of these twelve incredibly scarce posters! Condition: fair to good. Be sure to first read what is written above about this poster! The poster is fragile and has tears and tiny areas of paper loss on parts of the folds and borders, and may have darkening on folds or borders, and may have some bleed-through from printing on the back (for those that have printing on the back). Rather than attempt to describe individual defects, we would much rather you look at our super-sized image of the poster (especially since, on those from this collection that have printing on the back, you can also see the backs of some or all of the poster). Looking at those super-sized images should let you judge the exact condition of the poster. But clearly, all of the twelve posters from this remarkable collection are in urgent need of professional restoration, but after that is done by a talented restorer, they will look wonderful, and likely will not require much paint restoration!
