An Undated (probably 1930s) Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 35 1/2" [71 x 90 cm]) (Learn More) The Pace That Kills, the 1935 William A. O'Connor cocaine anti-drug propaganda thriller ("Keep this wolf from your door!"; "Destroyer of souls!"; "Senses drowned in forbidden pleasures"; "Adults Only!"; "Hollywood's newest smash hit - that has - Everything!"; "A Daring expose of jazz mad youth!"; "Tonight in heaven tomorrow in hell!"; "Astounding revelations of unguarded youth"; a really rabidly anti-drug "message" movie, with a gangster who goes around hooking people on cocaine, by having them snort what they think is a "headache remedy", and only after they are hopelessly hooked do they discover it was actually cocaine, and start on a one-way path to degradation and death!; in this movie, it is two teens who follow this path, a brother and sister, and they both become drug addicts, and the sister becomes a prostitute!) starring Lois January, Noel Madison, Dean Benton, Sheila Bromley (billed as "Sheila Manners"), and Frank Shannon. Note that this movie was a remake of the 1928 movie of the same name. There were "roadshow" releases in the late 1930s or early 1940s, with lured artwork posters, but not much image. In the 1960s, this movie was re-released under the title of "The Cocaine Fiends", and was often shown at midnight showings with the other 1930s drug classic "Reefer Madness"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is one of the movies that first came out in the middle 1930s and then played in "roadshow" releases all over the country through the early 1940s. It is next to impossible to date the posters for this movie, but usually the roadshow release posters have silkscreen-like images without studio names, as this one does, so we think this poster (which we have never auctioned before) is likely from a 1930s roadshow release of this movie (it could possibly be from the 1940s, but usually those have less color and more generic images). Also, the poster measures 28" x 35 1/2". We think it is likely that the poster originally measured 28" x 42", but that it had a large blank area, no doubt so that theaters could put play dates and show times, like with a window card, and that someone trimmed off all of that top blank area. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, it appears the poster originally had a large blank area that was completely trimmed off at the top. It also had a partial extra horizontal fold above the regular top one, with tiny paper loss and some creases on parts of the folds. There also were some stains and tears scattered in the top title area, and it seems likely there was once a snipe over that area. There were some tears, stains, and tiny paper loss in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. The restorer put a normal sized blank border at the top of the poster, where it had been trimmed off (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
