An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I (WWI) Army Recruiting Poster (measures 30" x 40") (Learn More) Columbia Calls, the 1916 U.S. World War I (WWI) military recruiting poster ("Enlist now for U.S. Army. Nearest recruiting station"; note that this poster includes a poem by Frances Adams Halstead) encouraging men to join the Army, and featuring Frances Adams Halsted and Vincent Aderente art of Columbia (an early symbol for America) standing on a globe and holding a flag and a sword. Interestingly, at the top of the poem is a swastika. Of course, in 1916, this was in no way a negative symbol, for this was long before Adolf Hitler thought to adopt this sign as the symbol of his Nazi party! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: V. Aderente & Frances Adams Halsted Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It had some creases and tears around the edges, and areas of paper loss in the top of the right border (slightly extending into the blue background). There was a piece of tape on the back of each corner, which slightly bled through to the front. There was a 1" tear in the center of the top border which was repaired with tape that has bled through to the front. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was backed on to a very thin linen, with no excess, and over the years, it was handled roughly, and there are now some tiny areas of paper loss in the borders that were not there originally, some extra tears in the borders, some small places where the poster is "lifting" from the edges of the linen, and some creases within the image, both within the poster and the linen. If I owned this great poster, I would certainly immediately have it removed from the linen, and have it properly re-backed. Afterwards, the poster would look fantastic, and there would be little restoration anywhere in the image area. Learn More about condition grades
