A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]; 278 pages) (Learn More) The Fleet's In, the 1928 Malcolm St. Clair silent Navy Naval military sailor romantic comedy ("Yoo-hoo girls The Fleet's In!"; about a sailor who meets a girl who works in a dance hall, but he mistakenly thinks she is a "working girl", so he doesn't want anything to do with her, but she wins him over) starring Clara Bow, James Hall, Jack Oakie, Bodil Rosing, Eddie Dunn, and Jean Laverty. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. The plot of this movie was incredibly popular! It was remade in 1936 as "Lady Be Careful" starring Lew Ayres and Mary Carlisle, again in 1942 starring Dorothy Lamour and William Holden, and again in 1952, re-titled "Sailor Beware", starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis! Note that Clara Bow was the most famous "flapper girl" of the mid to late 1920s (she became known as "The It Girl" after the character she played based on the popular novel by Elinor Glyn). She had a major role in Wings, and was Paramount's biggest star at that time. But she had a notorious private life and seemingly "settled down" when she married cowboy star Rex Bell in 1931 (she had two children and she retired from movies), but sadly in 1949 she went into a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt (she had had psychiatric issues for quite some time) and she was released but never returned to her family, and lived alone until her death in 1965. This book has the original dust jacket. Here are more details about these books: Grosset & Dunlap was a publisher that made a deal with all the studios in the 1910s to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies (there were also some by other publishers, but Grosset & Dunlap printed the lion's share of these). They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would usually include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s, and they are quite collectible, especially if they still have the original dust jacket! Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Condition: fair to good. The dust jacket is in a protective sleeve.
