An Undated (probably 1950s) Re-Release Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 45 1/4" x 61" [115 x 155 cm]) (Learn More) La Belle et la Bete (released in the U.S. in 1947 as "The Beauty and the Beast"), the classic 1946 Jean Cocteau French romantic fantasy adventure (based on the classic fairy tale by Madame Leprince de Beaumont; about a handsome prince who has a spell put on him that turns him into a beast, and he can't change back unless a beautiful woman loves him as he is!) starring Jean Marais (in a dual role as both la Bete and the Prince), Josette Day (in the title role as Belle), Mila Parely, Nane Germon, Michael Auclair, and Marcel Andre. Note that this movie had wonderful special effects (both by 1946 standards, and even by present day standards) and that it is one of the best loved fantasy movies of all time. In 1991, Walt Disney turned this into an animated feature length musical, and it has since been turned into a Broadway show and a live action movie, but this version still remains the best of all! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jean-Denis Malcles Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Note that the original 1946 French posters for this movie have a red DisCina at bottom left and bottom right. This 1950s re-release does not have those boxes, and has less color than the original, but otherwise looks pretty much the same (and because of this, many 1950s re-releases have been mistakenly sold as 1946 first releases). Oddly, the 1950s re-release is likely at least as rare as the 1946 original French posters, perhaps because it played at fewer theaters (we have only auctioned this re-release poster twice before)! Note also that the printing in the bottom border is right up to the edge of the poster. That might make one think that the poster was trimmed on the bottom border, but we think it was just printed slightly off center, with a slightly larger top border and no bottom blank area. We say this because the poster is folded, and unless it was trimmed prior to folding, there is no way that the bottom border was trimmed. Condition: good to very good. We believe the poster was printed slightly off center, resulting in no bottom blank border and a slightly larger top blank border (see above). It has separation at many crossfolds and pinholes around the edges, with a few tears on parts of some folds. After a relatively simple linenbacking, the poster will display really well!
