Date Sold 10/25/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Dirty Gertie From Harlem, U.S.A., the 1946 Spencer Williams New York City/Caribbean tropical island black African American musical ("All Colored Cast"; "Original Story by True T. Thompson"; loosely based on the story Miss Thompson by W. Somerset Maugham; about a prostitute who has to leave Harlem and ends up on a tropical island, where she entices good men to go bad) starring Francine Everette (in the title role as Gertie La Rue), Inez Newell, July Jones, Don Wilson, and Katherine Moore. Note that sadly, the director of this movie was handcuffed by having almost no budget at all, especially difficult when you were trying to create the illusion of filming on a real tropical island! Reviewers say that while the movie is entertaining and that star Francine Everett is terrific, the production values are so low that they severely hurt the movie. Strangest of all is director Williams playing a female fortune teller, and while he does wear a dress, he did not shave off his mustache, and he speaks in his usual deep voice! We wonder if perhaps the actress intended to play that role did not show up and that Williams stepped in to take over her part, with minimal effort! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that until August 2022, we had never seen any poster from this movie. At that time we were consigned a linenbacked one-sheet that had considerable restoration, and that poster auctioned for $875. It turns out that our consignor had a second example that he had not gotten restored, and he has now consigned it to us. Obviously it has really major defects, but it is also the only other example we know of! Condition: poor to fair. The poster has really significant defects and is extremely fragile. Please do not bid on it unless you can accept all that is wrong with it. Learn More about condition grades
