Magic Lantern Exhibition of Japanese Life and Scenery, the circa 1880s Henry C. Hawkins exhibition featuring images and information about Japan. Magic lanterns were the precursor of motion pictures, and were similar to a modern day slideshow. Once movies were invented, the public would no longer go to see magic lantern shows, and they were only used in settings like schools.
