An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded East German "A2" Movie Poster (16x23; measures 16 1/2" x 23 1/2" [42 x 60 cm]) (Learn More) Irgendwo in Berlin (released in English-speaking countries as "Somewhere in Berlin"), the 1946 (released in the U.S. in 1949) Gerhard Lamprecht East German post World War II (WWII) family relationship melodrama starring Hedda Sarnow, Harry Hindemith, Charles Brauer, Hans Trinkaus, Siegfried Utecht, and Fritz Rasp. Note that this film was produced in the Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany, which later became East Germany (for the sake of simplicity, we consider it an East German film). It was the third DEFA film released and was part of the group of "rubble films" (so called because they were filmed in the remains of cities and towns) made in the aftermath of the World War II. DEFA was founded in the Spring of 1946 in eastern Germany and was the first film production company in post-war Germany (using an old UFA studio in Potsdam). The plot revolves around Gustav and a gang of children living and playing amid the rubble of post-war Berlin. Gustav's father was taken as a prisoner-of-war, and the family has had no word from him. Gustav's father eventually returns but is an emotional wreck. But Gustav and the children eventually give the father fresh hope by persuading him to clean up his bomb-damaged garage. Director Gerhard Lamprecht started to work as a film projectionist at age twelve and directed his first film in 1920. In 1931, he directed the internationally acclaimed Emil and the Detectives with a screenplay by Billy Wilder. During Nazi Germany, Lamprecht tried to avoid making propaganda films, and mostly directed crime and melodrama movies. In 1946, Lamprecht made Somewhere in Berlin which was considered a huge triumph.
