A Paperbacked German Special Poster (measures 26 1/2" x 36 3/4" [67 x 93 cm]) (Learn More) Jubilaums-Ausstellung Mannheim (literally translates to "Jubilee-Exhibition Mannheim"), the 1907 German poster promoting an international art and horticulture trade exhibition which was held from May to October in the city of Mannheim, Germany. Note that this poster features August Groh art celebrating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Mannheim. Mannheim is unusual among German cities in that its streets and avenues are laid out in a grid pattern, leading to its nickname "die Quadratestadt" (The City of Squares). The eighteenth century Mannheim Palace, former home of the Prince-elector of the Palatinate, now houses the University of Mannheim. The Jubilee-Exhibition was an important event in this 18th century planned city's history with grand new architectural schemes and first film documentation for Mannheim, which also covers the inaugural visit of the Grand Duke. Artist: August Groh Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had a snipe in the center of the bottom border that was removed, causing surface paper loss and leaving some creases and stains. It had a tear and a tape stain in the left of the top blank border. It had a 7" tear in the right of the top border going between the letters, with small paper loss in the background between the "E" and "I" of "MANNHEIM". It had a piece of paper tape on the back of the top right blank corner, where there was small paper loss, and a tear and small paper loss in the lower right blank border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone had it backed onto a very thin paper backing. This was clearly for preservation rather than conservation, and no restoration was performed. However, the defects are primarily in the blank borders, and the poster will display well as it is, or certainly, one could choose to have additional slight restoration performed.
