Join the Navy: The Service For Fighting Men, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) Home Front recruitment poster encouraging men to join the United States Navy, and featuring wonderful Richard Fayerweather Babcock art of a sailor riding a torpedo. One wonders whether Stanley Kubrick was inspired by this poster when he created the scene in Dr. Strangelove, where Slim Pickens "rides" the atom bomb over Russia!
Artist: Richard Fayerweather Babcock
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this war poster, and the last one was 6 years ago, when it sold for $485!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had a 10" tear in the top center going into the sailor's body and the left side of his face, but there was almost no paper loss on that tear. There were smudges and stains around the edges of the poster, with a few pinholes. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
