An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Campaign Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 30 pages) (Learn More) Paramount 1935-36, the 1935 studio campaign book ("More than ever, the greatest name in pictures"), which was a special campaign book that Paramount put out promoting their releases solely for the first quarter of the 1935-36 movie season, which ran from the beginning of August through the end of October. Apparently, Paramount was issuing so much product at this time that they no longer did a campaign book each year, but instead did one each quarter of the year! This one has just 30 pages, with a summary of everything they would be releasing during those three months, with smaller illustrations by the names of the movies and subjects. The book includes information on their features (including The Milky Way with Harold Lloyd, Hands Across the Table with Carole Lombard, Cecil B. DeMille's The Crusades, and many others), and also a full page on their brand new Hopalong Cassidy series of westerns, plus a page on their Max Fleischer Color Classics, and another page on their 12 Popeyes and 12 Betty Boops! What is really fascinating about this is that the ad for Hopalong Cassidy says that James Gleason plays the lead and there is art of him as Cassidy, and is recognizably Gleason! What happened? Apparently, Gleason was all set to play the part, but at the last minute (after ads were prepared), he signed a long term contract with RKO, and Paramount had to quickly find a new Hopalong Cassidy. They turned to William Boyd, who had been a top star in the early 1930s, but he was 40 years old. Of course, this turned out to be the role of his lifetime, but the series would have been SO different had James Gleason played the lead! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
