An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 24 3/4" x 29 3/4" [63 x 76 cm]) (Learn More)

Paddy: The Next Best Thing, the 1933 Harry Lachman Ireland romantic comedy ("From the novel by Gertrude Page"; about a wealthy man who goes to a village in Ireland, and he meets an adorable tomboy named Paddy, and after many starts and stops, they ultimately fall in love!) starring Janet Gaynor (in the title role as Paddy Adair), Warner Baxter, Walter Connolly, Harvey Stephens, Margaret Lindsay, and Mary McCormic

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!). Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thin paper backing, it can be sent rolled (however, it will be rolled with the image outward, because paperbacked posters should always be rolled that way, while linen posters are always rolled with the image inward).

Note that this item (and others we are auctioning in this set of auctions) come to us from the estate of Lee Sanders. Mr. Sanders was a nationally recognized projectionist, film poster collector, and union activist who passed away earlier this year, and the net proceeds from the sale of his varied and eclectic collection will be donated to promote film studies at the Besant School of Happy Valley in Ojai, Ca.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had minor wear on the foldlines. It had some faint partial horizontal creases scattered in the poster. It had an irregular tear in the upper left border, extending into the blue background, with a 1" tear below it. There were a few small tears and pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
