An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Olympics, the 1937 H. Bruce Humberstone Asian detective Berlin Germany sports crime mystery thriller ("Murderous spies invade Olympic games!"; "A new world's record for thrills ....even for Chan!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Katherine DeMille, Pauline Moore, Allan 'Rocky' Lane, Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), C. Henry Gordon, Jonathan Hale, and Morgan Wallace. Note that the events in this movie take place at the infamous 1936 Berlin Olympics, where Adolf Hitler presided over the games, hoping they would prove Germany's Aryan superiority, but of course, exactly the reverse occurred! Also note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this one-sheet, (30 years ago and 25 years ago) and the last one sold for $1,955! We think this poster may be one of those two we auctioned so long ago, and if so, this is still only one of two examples we have ever auctioned! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had three extra horizontal folds, but there was only minor wear along all the folds. Half of the top blank border was folded back at one time, and there were a few pinholes and creases around the edges. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
