eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result d014 ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES linen one-sheet movie poster '39 Rathbone Date Sold 5/17/2005Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the classic 1939 Alfred L. Werker detective mystery crime thriller sequel ("Based on the play 'Sherlock Holmes' by William Gillette with the permission of the executors of the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle") starring Basil Rathbone (in the title role as Sherlock Holmes), Nigel Bruce (as Dr. Watson), Ida Lupino, Alan Marshal, Terry Kilburn, George Regas, Henry Stephenson, and E.E. Clive. Note that this is the second Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movie, and it was released by 20th Century Fox, as was their first film, "The Hound of the Baskervilles". All subsequent Rathbone & Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies were released by Universal! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been expertly linenbacked. Prior to restoration, the poster had numerous defects. There was a 23" slightly diagonal tear that ran from the right border to the right of the "K" of "SHERLOCK" across through the top of the letters of the title ending above the "H" of "SHERLOCK". There was a second long tear running from the "L" of "SHERLOCK" down to the middle of the bottom border. There was small paper loss in the "R" of "SHERLOCK" and larger paper loss in the "L" and "M" of "HOLMES". There was tattering down the vertical foldline with creases, tears, and paper loss. There were creases, tears, and paper loss in the top horizontal foldline, but fortunately no paper loss in the faces of the stars. The borders were somewhat tattered with tears and areas of paper loss. Clearly, this poster had significant damage. But if you read the above carefully, it is also clear that most of the damage was in unimportant areas, except for the letters of the title, which were relatively easy to correct by matching the red of the letters. All of the above defects have been really expertly repaired by Studio C, and the restoration is done in the way all posters should be restored (in my opinion). The poster does not have a "dipped in paint" look to it, and yet, when you look at the poster from a few feet away, you can only see traces of the restoration, but it is truly not very distracting at all. I would think most collectors would be quite happy to display this important poster on their wall! Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
