Date Sold 5/3/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1946 (from the first release of this movie in Belgium) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14" x 18 3/4" [36 x 48 cm]) (Learn More) The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an INCREDIBLY scarce movie poster! We have only auctioned it once before, and that was in 2013, and it auctioned for $4,102! Other than our previous sale, we can't find reference to any other auction that has had it (certainly not the major ones). If the wonderful image looks familiar to you, it is because there was a 1989 French re-release that used this image (blown up to one-panel size) and there have been many repros of that poster sold in various sizes. This is a different example from the one we auctioned in 2013, and we would imagine that there are surely one or more additional examples of this poster in private collections, so they are not "two of a kind", but the people who own it seem to absolutely want to KEEP owning it, because it just is almost never offered for sale (or at auction)! Not only is THIS non-U.S. poster from this most classic movie incredibly rare, but so are virtually all other first release non-U.S. posters (perhaps the movie did not get good distribution around the world when it first came out). To me, this is one of the absolute best images for this classic movie. You get the great lineup of headshots of the four top stars, plus Frank Morgan's Wizard, and there is great artwork at the bottom of the Wizard greeting them on the Yellow Brick Road (Toto, too!), and you even get the Wicked Witch in the top left corner (and she does not appear on virtually any advertising for this movie). I am sure the vast majority of collectors agree with me! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 18 3/4" [36 x 48 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster originally had a blank top that was neatly trimmed off (this is commonly done with Belgian posters, similar to how the blank top is trimmed off of U.S. window cards). The poster was folded across the original middle and had very minor wear on that fold. It had very faint creases in the top left corner. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
