A Paperbacked Swiss Advertising Poster (measures 34 3/4" x 50 1/4" [88 x 128 cm]) (Learn More) Persil is a brand of laundry detergent created in 1907 by the German company Henkel. It is notable because it was the first commercially available "self-activated" laundry detergent and it was a significant chemical breakthrough. During the washing process, oxygenated perborate forms small bubbles, doing the "work of the washboard", saving consumers time and rendering the historic method of "sun-bleaching" (by laying clothes out in the sun) unnecessary. The name is derived from two of its original ingredients, sodium perborate and sodium silicate. Today, Persil is sold in several countries in powder, liquid detergent, liquid capsule, liqui-gel, and tablet forms. Artist: Trude Wunsche Important Added Info: Note that it is ironic that this poster's intent is to show how much happier women were because they could use this self activated laundry detergent, as prior to the invention of modern day washing machines, women still spent hours each day cleaning their family's clothes! Also, note that the artist's first name is spelled online as Trude Wunsche, Trudy Wunsche and Trudi Wunsche. Also note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this poster, and that poster has been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded and had pinholes, tape stains, and a few tears in the top. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed with no excess paper around the edges, and it displays well! It appears the paperbacking was primarily done for conservation purposes and not for restoration purposes.
