A Folded German Special Poster (measures 22 3/4" x 74 1/2" [58 x 189 cm]) (Learn More) Victor Emmanuel III of Italy was King of Italy from 1900 until his abdication in 1946. A member of the House of Savoy, he also reigned as Emperor of Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941 and King of the Albanians from 1939 to 1943. During his reign of nearly 46 years, which began after the assassination of his father Umberto I, the Kingdom of Italy became involved in two world wars. His reign also encompassed the birth, rise, and fall of the Fascist regime in Italy. In 1946, Italy abolished the monarchy, and the former king died in exile in 1947 at the age of 78. Note that this is a stone litho poster from the German Alsatian region, and it is part of a large series of posters created in the latter half of the 19th century. The posters ranged from life-sized decorative images (that were used in homes, inns, party rooms and fairs) to political and religious posters with text in French, German and other languages. The posters were created by a Wissembourg (or Weissenburg in German) printing house run by Jean Frederic Wentzel (who founded the company in 1835) and Georg Friedrich Camille Burckardt (who took over the company in 1880 after Wentzel died). By the last part of the 19th century, the company was among the three largest printing houses in Europe for these popular prints and posters, with an output of two million images per year. Also, the Alsatian region has historically been contested by France and Germany, and in 1871 the region was annexed by Germany, which is why many posters feature text in German and German military figures and leaders. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster! It is one of five similar 1890s German posters we are currently auctioning in five separate auctions. Each has wonderful full-length art of a single figure, and each is roughly 130 years old! Note that this special poster was printed in 3 sections designed to overlap. Also note that long ago, a previous owner that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is not uncommon with many older multiple piece posters). Condition: very good. The three overlapping pieces of the poster were glued together as intended (see above). The poster is in generally nice condition considering its age, but it has some tiny stains and tiny paper loss in parts of the right blank border (and some fainter staining in the other borders), and some light rippling and creases scattered in parts of the poster. Otherwise, it is in nice condition, and after a simple linenbacking, it will display really well, or it could be displayed exactly as it is. It is partially a tribute to how well it was stored that is survived so well, but also a sign that they printed posters on better paper 130 years ago than they did a few decades later, when they switched to very cheap pulp paper which ages poorly. The paper this poster was printed on is of a much better quality, and has aged far better (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
