An Unfolded Silkscreen Travel Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 32 3/4" [59 x 83 cm]) (Learn More) The United States Lines was an American transatlantic shipping company that operated cargo services from 1921 to 1989, and ocean liners until 1969, most famously, the SS United States. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! Also note the SS United States is a retired ocean liner built in 1950 for the United States Lines company. The ship is the largest ocean liner constructed entirely in the United States and the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction. The ship is currently berthed in Philadelphia while plans for a restoration of the ship are investigated. Note finally that silkscreen (also known as screen printing) is a printing technique whereby a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a poster. Only one color is printed at a time, so several screens must be used to produce a multicolored design, and it is a laborious technique because it is traditionally all done by hand. Because of the rich thickness of the layer of color on the paper and the resulting depth and brilliance achieved through silkscreen printing, this technique was preferred by many artists throughout many cultures and periods. Condition: good to very good. The poster has creases around the edges and a few light scuff marks scattered in various areas (typical of silkscreen-style posters from the 1950s). It has never been folded and is otherwise in generally nice condition, and after a simple linenbacking the poster will look great! Learn More about condition grades
