An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47" x 63" [119 x 160 cm]) (Learn More) Vesyolye Rebyata (released in the U.S. as "Moscow Laughs" and in other English-speaking countries as "Happiness"), the 1934 Grigori Aleksandrov Russian romantic love triangle mistaken identity musical slapstick comedy (the first Russian sound musical comedy, and a very important movie that is very highly regarded, but is little remembered today; about a shepherd who uses his pan pipes to get his sheep to do whatever he wants, and there is a peasant girl madly in love with him, but then he is mistaken for a famous musician, and a rich woman falls for him, and he is asked to play music for rich people, but he forgets himself and uses his pan pipes, and animals stampede the gathering!) starring Leonid Utyosov, Lyubov Orlova, Mariya Strelkova, Yelena Tyapkina, and Fyodor Kurikhin. Note that director Grigori Aleksandrov was a very major figure in early Russian cinema! He was an actor, writer, and a director, and he worked closely with Sergei Eisenstein, including on his masterpieces Battleship Potemkin and October (Ten Days That Shook the World), and he alone directed Volga-Volga, The Circus, and many more. This movie celebrates the "proletariat", and it fell out of favor with Stalin in the early 1940s, as did the director. The movie still exists, and there are several different versions that were reconstructed. This movie and this director both need to be "rediscovered"! Artist: Uzelac Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one example of this extremely rare poster in all our years of auctioning! Note also that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only pre-war heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Condition: good. Learn More about condition grades
