An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 42" x 79 3/4" [107 x 203 cm]) (Learn More) 'Twas Ever Thus, the 1915 Elsie Janis silent history-of-romance comedy ("A romance of the ages") starring Elsie Janis (billed as "The International Star"; she wrote and directed this, and she also stars in all the separate segments which detail how romance changed over many years), Hobart Bosworth, Owen Moore, Myrtle Stedman, and Harry Ham. Note that this was an incredibly ambitious movie from star/director Elsie Janis, in that it had a caveman segment, a Civil War segment, and a "modern times" segment, which required much costuming and set design for the first two segments. It seems likely that D.W. Griffith saw this movie and was inspired by it to make "Intolerance", which had a similar structure, and which came out the following year. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a glass slide from this movie (and NO movie paper of any kind) until we received this three-sheet! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had several fairly large areas of paper loss in the top right white background area, extending into the top right of the man's hair and slightly across his hair, and continuing to a lesser degree in the background to the left of his hair. It had paper loss in the green area just below the center of the image. It had paper loss in the middle of the "JA" of "JANIS" at the bottom of the poster, and much paper loss scattered across the top half of the title. Other than these areas of paper loss, the poster was in pretty good condition prior to linenbacking. A talented restorer did a nice job in not only replacing the areas of paper loss described above, but also in doing it in such a way that is not very noticeable. Of course, one would rather find an example of this poster in better condition, but it is quite likely this is the only surviving example, and as we say, it will display well on the new owner's wall!
