An Original Vintage Folded Circus Poster (measures 28" x 198" [71 x 503 cm]) (Learn More) Tom Mix Circus was a 1930s traveling circus ("Tom Mix 'himself' and Tony will positively appear at each performance"; "Tom Mix and Tony [in person]"; "Colossal array of American and European stars"; "Idol of millions - the hero of American youth") run by and starring Tom Mix. Cowboy western movie actor Tom Mix was the headline star of the Sells Floto circus from 1929 to 1932. He was paid $20,000 a week! Unfortunately, the success of that circus caused Mix to leave Sells Floto and after appearing with some other circuses, he started his own circus in 1935, and it ruined him financially (likely because it was during the height of The Great Depression), and it folded in 1938. Note that at the time he headlined in his own circus, he was between 55 and 58 years old, and yet he still performed many of his classic stunts and sharpshooting routines himself! Even more amazing, his horse from his movie days, Tony (The Wonder Horse), appeared with him even through his time in his own circus, when Tony was in his late 30s! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this circus poster! Given its very large size, it would seem incredibly likely that this is the only surviving example of this poster! Note that this circus poster was printed in 5 sections designed to overlap, and the place that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is typical of many actual used posters in multiple pieces). Condition: fair to good. The theater that used this poster glued the pieces together before putting them on display (this is typical of many actual theater-used posters in multiple pieces). It has many creases, tears, scuff marks and areas of paper loss around the edges and along portions of the folds, and many of the defects are repaired with tape from the back, some of which slightly bleeds through to the front. There is some staining at left in portions of the art there and some of the tape repaired tears at right are somewhat large. The poster has significant defects, and one should see our super-sized images to get a good sense of the condition of this poster and bear in mind those defects prior to placing a bid, and the poster can be restored, but in any case the owner of this extremely rare poster will have likely the only surviving example of this poster for their collection!
