An Original Vintage Theatrical German 9 1/4" x 11 3/4" [23 x 30 cm] Newsreel Still (Learn More) Die Deutsche Wochenschau (literally translates to "The German Weekly Review"), the 1940s German World War II (WWII) newsreel series. The coordinated newsreel production was set up as a vital instrument for the mass distribution of Nazi propaganda. Today the preserved Wochenschau short films make up a significant part of the audiovisual records of the Nazi era. Die Deutsche Wochenschau received film stock from special Wehrmacht war reporting units. The material was a source of footage for late Nazi propaganda films such as The Eternal Jew and The Campaign in Poland, as well as innumerable post-war documentaries. Among the many notable scenes preserved by the newsreel are the Nazi point of view during the Battle of Normandy, the footage of Hitler and Mussolini right after the July 20th plot, and the last footage of Hitler awarding the Iron Cross to Hitler Youth volunteers in the garden of the Reich Chancellery shortly before the Battle of Berlin. In the 1930s, there were four different newsreels from four different studios, but in 1933, the UFA one was given to the Nazi party, and then in 1940, the four (UFA Tonwoche, Tobis-Wochenschau, Deulig-Wochenschau, and Twentieth Century Fox) were consolidated into this Die Deutsche Wochenschau newsreel series. Important Added Info: Note that this German still measures 9 1/4" x 11 3/4" [23 x 30 cm]. It was created for a German newsreel that was produced weekly. We imagine these were sent to German theaters to either get them to show these newsreels, or just as likely, to put in their lobby so that patrons would know what was in the current newsreel. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good to fine. The still has an embossed stamp with the Nazi eagle and swastika at lower left. Most German movie paper from this time had this either embossed or printed on it, and it is definitely not any kind of defect. Learn More about condition grades
