Date Sold 12/16/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Secret, the 1936 Gordon Wiles Asian detective crime mystery thriller ("Is Chan doomed at last?"; "Death strikes unseen! Dread peril threatens! But his lips are sealed! Why?"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Rosina Lawrence, Charles Quigley, Henrietta Crosman, Edward Trevor, Astrid Allwyn, Herbert Mundin, Ivan Miller, and Francis Ford. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card was in excellent condition EXCEPT for a significant defect. It had many fine scratches scattered in the bottom center of the card, with one in the tip of the woman's nose, one running in Oland's nose and upper lip, and a few others scattered in the rest of the card. Someone used colored ink to touch up those areas without backing the card. From a reasonable viewing distance, these defects and the restoration of them is not very distracting, but when you look closely at the card, it becomes more and more noticeable. As we said, the card is otherwise in wonderful condition, so we leave it to the bidders to read the above carefully and decide how this affects the value of the card to them, prior to placing a bid on it.
