McGann & Michael Curtiz New York City prison convict crime thriller ("John Garfield dramatically exposes Blackwell's Island"; "Original story by Crane Wilbur & Lee Katz") starring John Garfield, Rosemary Lane, Dick Purcell, Victor Jory, and Stanley Fields. Note that this movie was loosely based on real life events. In 1828, New York City purchased this island, which was in the harbor outside New York City, and put a prison there. They later added a mental institution for mentally ill patients and also a hospital. But over the years, there was massive corruption at the prison. In 1934, a major racketeer set up shop inside the prison, running his criminal enterprises from within the prison (a real life "Dr. Mabuse", the master criminal that Fritz Lang had running a German criminal empire from within a mental hospital). It took a lot of doing, but New York City was able to shut down the criminal enterprise and somewhat clean up the prison, and this movie was a fictionalized version of those events.
