An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #4 (Revenge of the Volkites) Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Undersea Kingdom, the 1936 B. Reeves Eason & Joseph Kane underwater science fiction (sci-fi) fantasy serial ("A Republic Serial in 12 Amazing Episodes"; "Original Story by Tracy Knight - John Rathmell"; about a college graduate, a lady reporter, and a geology professor who search for the source of earthquakes at the bottom of the ocean, and discover the lost civilization of Atlantis, where they intervene between two groups who are fighting to decide who will get to take over the entire Earth) starring Ray 'Crash' Corrigan, Lois Wilde, Monte Blue (as Unga Khan!), William Farnum, Lon Chaney Jr., Lane Chandler, Jack Mulhall, Malcolm McGregor, Lee Van Atta (as the young boy wearing the sailor cap), C. Montague Shaw, and John Merton. Note that this early science fiction thriller included really early robots (among the first in movies!). Note that for this serial, Republic Pictures prepared great full-color artwork one-sheets that were completely different from each other for each of the chapters (at least for the four different ones we have seen!). One wishes that all of the studios had done this for all of the serials. What wonderful posters there would have been! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned many first release lobby cards from this serial, but we have never before auctioned this chapter 4 title card! Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good. The card had stains, tears, and some paper loss around the edges, extending into the tagline at top and the image at the bottom. Overall, the card was in fair to good condition prior to restoration. Given the card's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can clearly see signs of the defects and the restoration (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the card looks now).
