An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Private Secretary, the 1935 Henry Edwards English mistaken identity screwball comedy (about a timid clergyman who is duped into helping a playboy avoid his creditors and gain his inheritance) starring Edward Everett Horton (in the title role as the secretary), Barry McKay, Judy Gunn, Oscar Asche, and Sydney Fairbrother. Note that Edward Everett Horton had been a lead comedy star in the 1920s and had drifted into character roles in the 1930s. Right before this movie, he had appeared in "Top Hat" with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It seems odd that he had the starring role in this English movie, and those who have seen the movie say that it looks like his part might have been "spliced in", perhaps to help the movie gain a wider audience. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster is from Atlantic Pictures. This company did a lot of re-releases in the early to late 1930s, but it seems that they also did first U.S. releases of non-U.S. movies. Since we have never seen any movie paper on this title from any other releasing company, we think it is extremely likely this was from the first U.S. release. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this poster is extremely rare. We have never auctioned it before! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny tears and small bits of paper loss on parts of most folds, with some pinholes around the edges and paper loss in the top left blank corner. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
