An Original Vintage Comic Book (measures 7" x 10 1/4" [18 x 26 cm]) (Learn More) Mad, the classic humor magazine ("Humor in a jugular vein") from the 1950s to the present. This comic was published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. It was originally a comic book edited by Harvey Kurtzman, and it was one of the famous EC Comics (E.C. Comics) that were banned in the mid-1950s, due to excessive horror content. At that point, publisher Gaines canceled most of his comic book titles, and turned Mad into a magazine with its 24th issue. Unfortunately, he and Kurtzman soon had a falling out, and Al Feldstein, who had been Gaines' writing partner on the Mad comic books (and Feldstein had edited Panic, EC's own imitation of Mad), took over, and the magazine became one of the great success stories of the 1950s and 1960s (led by its trademark character, Alfred E. Neuman, a goofy looking guy whose slogan was "What, me worry?"), with a circulation in the millions at its peak. Gaines never allowed any advertising of any kind in the magazine! In recent years, there was a "Mad" TV show which perfectly captures the spirit of the magazine! Artist: Basil Wolverton Important Added Info: Contents: Cover by Basil Wolverton. "Flesh Garden!", script by Harvey Kurtzman, art by Wally Wood; Flesh defeats aliens and the champion of King Mong but refuses to return to Earth; Parody of Flash Gordon. "Murder the Husband!", script by Bill Gaines and Al Feldstein, art by Jack Davis; A man murders his lover's husband but also manages to sink the rowboat he and the husband are in. "Murder the Story!", script by Harvey Kurtzman, art by Jack Davis; Parody of a typical EC-like comic book mystery. "Dragged Net!", script by Harvey Kurtzman, art by Will Elder; Parody of the crime television series, "Dragnet." 36 pgs., full color. $0.10. Cover price $0.10. Please note that we don't use a "comic guide" grading system, and OUR grading scale is completely different from standard comic book grading. Our "very good" is completely different from a comic book graded "very good". Note that in the case of this comic, we pictured all of the pages, because it is of greater interest to collectors, and we want them to be able to see every single page of the comic, which should allow all bidders to get a sense of the exact condition of this comic book. Note: We have 21 images of this comic book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 21 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 11. This is one of an excellent collection of 138 vintage comic books we were consigned, which we are auctioning in 138 separate auctions. NONE of these comics have any restoration (unless noted in our condition description) and all of them came from a small group of collectors who purchased them mostly when they were first published, and none have been "slabbed" or "graded"! And EVERY one of these 138 comics (including some really excellent ones) start at $1 with truly no reserve. This is the kind of buying opportunity every comic book collector dreams of, and when these auctions close on January 16, every one of these comics will have a new owner! Condition: fair to good. Note that this comic book will be sent to the winning bidder in a brand new Mylite4 protective sleeve and a full-back 100% acid-free backing board. Learn More about condition grades
