An unnamed "office boy" was introduced in 1938, which is claimed to be Olsen's first appearance by some, but his first formal appearance was made on a radio show in 1940. Olsen is a young photojournalist working for the Daily Planet. He is close friends with Lois Lane and Superman, and has a good working relationship with his boss Perry White. Olsen looks up to his coworkers as role models and parent figures. In the Silver Age, he appeared in the comic book series Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen.
