DIXIE DUGAN 1sh '43

Lease from Hershenson/Allen Archive

An Original Vintage One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More)

Dixie Dugan, the 1943 Otto Brower World War II (WWII) Home Front government secretary romantic love triangle comedy ("She's fun in the funnies! She's a scream on the screen!"; based on the newspaper comic strip by Joseph P. McEvoy; about a girl who gets a job as a secretary to a government official, and both he and her fiancee think that women have no place in the workplace, but she proves them both wrong) starring James Ellison, Charlotte Greenwood, Charles Ruggles (billed as "Charlie Ruggles"), Lois Andrews (in the title role; billed as "Introducing Lois Andrews as 'Dixie'"), and Helene Reynolds. Note that this film was the first film in what was to be a series of films based on this comic strip character but the film flopped at the box office so the series was scrapped! Note that "Dixie Dugan" is forgotten today, but it was a very popular comic strip that started in 1929. She originally was a showgirl, modeled on Louise Brooks, but after the Stock Market Crash, she became a regular working girl (no, not THAT kind!), who had a series of jobs to support herself, and single women everywhere identified with her. The strip ran until 1966, when women's liberation did her in!
