An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 13" x 21" [33 x 53 cm]) (Learn More) Blood and Sand, the 1922 Fred Niblo silent Spain bullfighting matador romantic love triangle melodrama ("From the novel by Vicente Blasco Ibanez and the play by Tom Cushing."; about a young matador who marries his childhood sweetheart, but then, after he becomes a big success, he betrays his wife with a beautiful aristocrat, but his wife accepts it and stays with him, but when he starts to age and looses some of his skills, he is in a major bullfight, and he sees his lover with another man, and that distracts him, and he gets fatally gored, and he dies in his wife's arms, telling her he always loved her!) starring Rudolph Valentino (billed as "Rodolph Valentino", which was his actual name), Lila Lee, Nita Naldi, Rosa Rosanova, Leo White, Rosita Marstini, and Walter Long. We saw reference on the Internet to there being an alternate ending to this movie that was shot where it is a "happy ending", where he does not die, but we can't confirm that. Note that Valentino wanted this movie shot on location in Spain, but Paramount insisted on shooting it in Hollywood, to save money. Recently enacted animal cruelty laws meant that no bulls could be hurt while filming, so stock footage of bullfights had to be used. But fortunately, the film editor was Dorothy Arzner (later a very successful female director), and she interspersed stock footage with footage of Valentino so well that most viewers could not detect that this was done (this was a pretty new technique at the time). Valentino had had major success with "The Sheik" and "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" the year before, and this movie was also a giant success, and made him a superstar in Hollywood and throughout the world! Note that the movie was remade in 1941, with Tyrone Power Jr. and Rita Hayworth. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 13" x 21" [33 x 53 cm]. Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had paper loss in the lower right, extending from Valentino's shoulder across to the right border, and straight down to the bottom border. It also had paper loss in Valentino's chin and stains, tears, and tiny bits of paper loss scattered in the rest of the image, with stains and paper loss around the edges. Overall, the card was in poor condition prior to paperbacking. Someone mounted the card onto a different window card and then recreated the missing part of the image at lower right, and only did very slight touch up to the rest of the card (perhaps leaving off some of the trimmed blank borders, because the card now measures 13" x 21"). The card is separating from the backing in the bottom left corner, but it certainly should be re-restored anyway. You can clearly see the above defects and the restoration of the above defects when looking at the card, so please bear all of the above defects and lesser restoration in mind before bidding on it.
