Date Sold 6/8/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War II Military Recruitment tPoster (measures 11" x 21" [28 x 53 cm]) (Learn More) The United States Navy, the 1940s U.S. World War II (WWII) recruitment poster ("The United States Navy trains men in various lines of endeavor and develops skill in more than fifty different trades") encouraging men to enlist in the United States Navy (and stressing that they would come out of the Navy with a valuable trade that they could continue performing after the war) and featuring Matt Murphey art of a Navy welder. Note that the man who did the art on this poster was not only a wonderful artist, but he was also a really wonderful man! He was born in 1898 in Redding, California. When he turned 18, he joined the Navy, and served in World War I, and unlike many men of his time and age, he stayed in the Navy after the war ended. In the early 1930s, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, and he was the postmaster there, and he was able to make his amateur art part of his job, when he created graphics for letter covers. He married a young woman from Southern California in 1933. In 1940, Murphey created a series of posters, including this one, for Navy recruitment, so it predates the U.S.'s entry into World War II, showing that at least some in the government realized that the U.S. would surely soon enter the war, and were starting recruitment drives! But after Pearl Harbor, Murphey wanted to return to combat, even though he was 44. On February 7, 1943, the ship he was on, the U.S.S. Henry R. Mallory was torpedoed by a German U-boat, and 272 men died, including Murphey (although the news was withheld from the public until November 1944, because at that time, bad news was withheld under "The War Powers Act of 1941", which allowed the President to censor news that might negatively affect public morale. Murphey had spent a total of 27 years in the Navy, including both World Wars, and he was survived by his widow, Emma Hunter Murphey. He was a true American hero!) Artist: Matt Murphey Important Added Info: Note that this poster is printed on a heavier weight paper stock, similar to that of window cards of this time period. It cannot be rolled and sent in a tube, so it will need to be sent in a large flat package. Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
