An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) New York, the 1927 Luther Reed silent Manhattan New York City gangster romantic triangle crime melodrama ("Story by Barbara Chambers and Becky Gardiner"; about a New York gangster whose girlfriend visits his best friend, who was her childhood sweetheart, and he is about to get married, but the gangster misunderstands and thinks that his girlfriend is cheating on him, and he kills her, and his best friend is charged with the murder, and he keeps silent, but another friend of theirs ultimately reveals the truth; this is very similar in plot to both "Manhattan Melodrama" and "Once Upon a Time In America", and it seems likely that both movies drew off of this one, and oddly, in this movie, William Powell plays the gangster, but in "Manhattan Melodrama", he "switches sides", and plays the good guy!) starring Ricardo Cortez, Lois Wilson, Estelle Taylor, William Powell, and Norman Trevor. Note that one would think that with many hundreds of movies set in New York, there would have been many movies with the title "New York". Yet only this movie, and one obscure 1916 movie have this name! This movie was one of the last major silent movies, but is largely forgotten today. One wonders when some movie maker will realize how long it has been since this title was used, and will make the first sound movie with the title "New York" (and the same plot could certainly be re-used)! Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was found in an amazing find of silent inserts that we auctioned on 8/3/2010. There were two examples of two of the best inserts in that find, this poster, plus "Sorrows of Satan", and we are auctioning the second examples of both of those posters in this auction (we are also re-auctioning the "Babe Comes Home" insert that was not paid for from that 8/3 auction). There are no further examples of this poster, so this is a rare "second chance" to purchase this wonderful poster (the first example, which was in quite a bit better condition than this example auctioned for $3,175). Note that there are some collectors who restrict their movie poster collecting to one-sheets, refusing to purchase other sizes. This movie is a perfect example of why that can be a very foolish and restricting decision! We previously auctioned the one-sheet from this movie (which can be seen at http://www.emovieposter.com/imagearchive/poster/119133.html). The one-sheet poster has a very plain image, while this wonderful insert poster has a magnificent image. Which poster would you rather have in your collection? Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded, but it had a diagonal crease and partial tear across the lower part of the poster, running just above the credits and just extending into the bottom of the "RK" of "NEW YORK". There were smudges, stains, and scuffs scattered throughout the poster, and tears and areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was first cleaned chemically, and then properly paperbacked, and some of the defects had some restoration, but others that were not distracting (like faint smudges) were left alone. The poster was well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, especially on close inspection. Learn More about condition grades
