An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Spartacus, the classic 1960 Stanley Kubrick sword-and-sandal Ancient Wars gladiator sports action adventure epic ("Winner of 4 Academy Awards!"; "They trained him to kill for their pleasure... But they trained him a little too well..."; "A mighty motion picture!"; "Based on the novel by Howard Fast"; written by Dalton Trumbo) starring Kirk Douglas (in the title role as Spartacus), Laurence Olivier (as Crassus, who liked both oysters and snails, or was it truffles and artichokes?), Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton (as Gracchus), Peter Ustinov (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Woody Strode (as Draba), Tony Curtis ("as Antoninus"), John Gavin (as Julius Caesar), Charles McGraw (as the gladiator trainer), and Herbert Lom. Note that Kirk Douglas was the producer of this movie and originally Anthony Mann was directing. But three weeks into filming, Douglas fired Mann and replaced him with Stanley Kubrick, who then fired Sabine Bethmann, who had been the female lead, and replaced her with Jean Simmons! Also note that Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted during the HUAAC hearings in the early 1950s, and he was still blacklisted at this time, so he was not going to receive screen credit. Kubrick heard this and wanted to be given the screenwriter credit (since someone had to be credited), but producer Douglas courageously insisted on Trumbo receiving the credit on screen, which effectively ended the blacklist! UPDATED 04/24/2017: Note that a knowledgeable collector tells us that the couple in the middle of the photo are Abba Eban (the Israeli Ambassador to the United States) and his wife, Suzy Eban. Note that this still likely has a stamp on the back in the form of a diamond that has the letters "TRR". One certainly might wonder who placed this stamp there and why. The answer is that 160 of the stills in this set of auctions come to us from a still collector who has collected for many decades, and long ago he began stamping the back of almost his stills with this stamp, and "TRR" is his initials! Each of those stills is stamped lightly, and the stamp does NOT affect the front of the still. He is a VERY advanced collector, and he has consigned many wonderful stills to us!
