An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 11" x 16 1/2" [28 x 42 cm]; 26 pages). Also included is a rotogravure herald that has 4 pages and is bound in. (Learn More) Wings, the 1927 William A. Wellman silent/talking World War I (WWI) military airplane aviation romantic thriller melodrama ("To those young warriors of the sky whose wings are folded about them forever in this motion picture is reverently dedicated."; "Story by John Monk Saunders"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Clara Bow, Charles 'Buddy' Rogers, Richard Arlen, Arlette Marchal, Gary Cooper (in one of his first major roles!), Jobyna Ralston, El Brendel, Richard Tucker, and Roscoe Karns. Note that Arlette Marchal was a French actress who had some success in American silent films. She was fourth billed when this movie was first released in 1927, but likely she had great trouble speaking English, because when the movie had dialogue added in 1929, she was no longer billed at all! Also note that Clara Bow was the most famous "flapper girl" of the mid to late 1920s (she became known as "The It Girl" after the character she played based on the popular novel by Elinor Glyn). She had a major role in Wings, and was Paramount's biggest star at that time. But she had a notorious private life and seemingly "settled down" when she married cowboy star Rex Bell in 1931 (she had two children and she retired from movies), but sadly in 1949 she went into a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt (she had had psychiatric issues for quite some time) and she was released but never returned to her family, and lived alone until her death in 1965. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this pressbook! Not only is this pressbook incredibly rare, but posters from the movie are also incredibly rare, and trying to find one from the first release is incredibly frustrating for those who collect posters from Oscar winners! Note that there is a 4-page rotogravure herald that is bound into the center of the pressbook (and it says "This is the rotogravure section" at the top of it, but it is definitely a herald. Note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note: We have 13 images of this pressbook, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 13 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 3. Condition: fair to good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. The interior pages have darkened and are printed on newsprint and are incredibly fragile, and are chipping around the edges, and there are some small areas of paper loss. There is also a heavy blue tape down the spine which prevents the pressbook from being opened completely. If I owned this incredibly rare pressbook, I would have a professional remove the blue tape and then do something to preserve the interior pages, but of course, it can simply be left as it is. However, please bear in mind its condition before bidding (and of course, one would prefer to find a better condition example, but we don't know that one exists! Learn More about condition grades
