An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Lost Patrol, the classic 1934 John Ford World War I (WWI) military adventure thriller melodrama ("Every woman living will love this staggering drama of living men!"; "Hearts that burn for women on the burning sands of Hell!"; "Brutal! Blazing! Glorious! It's great because it's real!"; "Glorious! Blazing!"; "The towering life triumph of John Ford who directed 'The Iron Horse', 'Arrowsmith', 'Men Without Women', 'Four Sons', and Pilgrimage'"; "From the story 'Patrol' by Philip MacDonald") starring Victor McLaglen, Boris Karloff, Wallace Ford, Reginald Denny, J.M. Kerrigan, Billy Bevan (one of the better Charlie Chaplin imitators of the time), Alan Hale Sr., Brandon Hurst, Douglas Walton, Sammy Stein, Howard Wilson, and Paul Hanson. Note that Sammy Stein was a professional football player in the NFL, playing there between 1929 and 1932. He then became a professional wrestler, and he then became a movie actor, appearing in 58 movies, almost always playing a bad guy, often a crook or an outlaw cowboy (likely one of the very few Jewish cowboys ever!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an incredibly rare poster! We have never auctioned it before, or any other poster from the first 1934 release of this movie. It is likely so incredibly rare because this 1934 movie was quickly re-released in 1939, and RKO created all new posters for the re-release (and that 1939 re-release material is also extremely rare, perhaps because the movie was again re-released in 1949), and it is likely that all of the remaining 1934 posters were destroyed at the time of the 1939 or 1949 re-releases. How do we know this is from 1934 and not 1939 (since this poster is undated)? The RKO logo was changed slightly between 1934 and 1939, and this poster has the logo that was used in 1934. Also, it references John Ford movies from the 1920s through 1933 in the tagline, and if it had been created in 1939, they would have surely mentioned some of his later hits. Finally, Merian C. Cooper gets better billing on this poster than he did in 1939, due to his change in position at RKO! We are 100% certain this poster is the incredibly rare 1934 first release half-sheet. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Also note that because this poster was backed onto a fairly stiff heavyweight paper backing, we would MUCH prefer to send it in a large flat package rather than attempting to roll it in a tube, so bear that extra expense in mind before placing a bid on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had small areas of paper loss and pinholes in the blank borders, with creases and tears that extended into the image in some areas. There was an 8" tear in the middle of the left border and a matching one in the middle of the right border, and the one on the left went through the Ford tagline and through the right of Karloff's forehead. There were a few pinholes scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Also, the poster was somewhat roughly handled, and there are now some tiny chips of paper loss in the edges of the blank borders, as well as a few creases in the bottom of the poster. These areas could be touched up by any restorer, and certainly they will not show when the poster is framed. Learn More about condition grades
