Date Sold 10/30/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More) The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release large posters from this movie are extremely rare. We have NEVER before auctioned a three-sheet from this movie before we were consigned this poster, and we have only auctioned one example of a six-sheet (and that was 26 years ago, when it sold for $9,200)! To give you a sense of how much more rare the three-sheets and six-sheets are than the one-sheets, we have auctioned ten one-sheets, compared to one three-sheet (after this auction is completed!) and one six-sheet!
UPDATED 10/12/2022: Note that we have updated the Condition information. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had its borders trimmed off and it had small paper loss at some crossfolds and no paper loss at others. It had some small tears and tiny paper loss on parts of some folds. It had some tears near to folds. It had an 8" horizontal tear starting in the vertical fold 2" below the last "L" of "STILL" and extending through to the woman's upper chest. It had a diagonal tear in the bottom center starting at the bottom crossfold and running through the background to the bottom border, just touching the woman's hand. It had a few other creases and tears scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed and the borders were replaced, and you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, but this is much more when you look at the poster from up close. From a reasonable viewing distance, it displays well, and this wonderful rare poster will look great on the new owner's wall (and of course, additional restoration could be performed, but that would be up to the new owner of this poster). However, bear the above defects and the restoration of those defects in mind before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
