A Linenbacked Japanese Travel Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 42 1/2" [70 x 108 cm]) (Learn More) Japanese Government Railways was the national railway system which was founded in 1871 and directly operated by the central government of Japan until 1949. It is a predecessor of Japanese National Railways and the Japan Railways Group. One of the roles of the railway was to attract foreign tourists to Japan. In 1930, the government created the Board of Tourist, and they printed and distributed picture posters and English guidebooks overseas and encouraged development of resort hotels at home. The Board was dissolved in 1942, following the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had pinholes in the corners and many creases and small tears scattered down the left and right, with a few in the top and bottom borders and a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
