Note that Ferdinand Diehl and his brother Hermann made puppet films starting in the 1930s. Hermann would create the puppets and Ferdinand would direct and handle animation. From the late 1930s to the 1940s, they made several films based on Grimm fairy tales for the Reich Office for Educational Films (later known as Reich Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education). Up until the 1960s, their works were part of the standard repertoire of afternoon cinema screenings or 16mm screenings in schools. Probably their most popular creation is Mecki the hedgehog, a household character especially through the 1950s and mascot of Hoerzu TV and radio magazine.
