An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Rose of Blood, the 1917 J. Gordon Edwards silent Russian Revolution romantic melodrama (based on a story by Ryszard Ordynski; a really great story of a governess to a Russian Prince right at the start of the Russian Revolution, and when his wife dies, she becomes his surrogate wife, but he refuses to marry her because she is a "commoner", and she joins the Revolution; when the Prince begs her to return and marry him, she does so, but as a double agent for the revolutionaries, killing noblemen and leaving a rose by their body; then the revolutionaries order her to kill her husband, and she can't bear the thought of it, but ultimately, she sets off a bomb that not only kills him, but kills herself, because she can't live with what she has done!) starring Theda Bara, Genevieve Blinn, Charles Clary, Marie Kiernan, and Joe King. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had darkened and it was never folded. It had areas of paper loss around the edges, but completely in the blank borders, with just a few scuffs and pinholes in the edges of the image. There was a 7" tear near the center of the top border that ended in Bara's hair. There were many scuffs and smudges scattered in the image, but much more so in Bara's solid colored dress. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! The restorer recreated the missing portions of the blank borders around the edges but did not address the darkening (which I think was a wise idea, because it would have required much bleaching). The poster was well backed, and displays well. Learn More about condition grades
