An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked South American One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/4" x 39 3/4" [69 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) The Case of the Black Cat, the 1936 William C. McGann courtroom lawyer legal crime mystery thriller (based on the Perry Mason series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner; about an eccentric millionaire who makes bequests in his will, including that his caretaker's cat be taken care of for the rest of its life, and then he seemingly dies accidentally, but Perry Mason, who is hired to "defend" the cat, who was being cut out of the will, discovers that the man was actually murdered, and of course, he brilliantly figures out who that murderer was) starring Ricardo Cortez (as Perry Mason), June Travis (as Della Street), Jane Bryan (in her very first movie), Craig Reynolds, Carlyle Moore Jr., Bill Elliott, Garry Owen (as Paul Drake), and George Rosener. Note that the book this movie was based on was called "The Case of the Caretaker's Cat", but "The Black Cat" had been a giant success for Universal, and Warner Bros. changed the title of this movie to "The Case of the Black Cat", even though the cat in question wasn't black! Also note that Warner Bros. purchased the rights to these characters in 1934, and the first movie in the series was "The Case of the Howling Dog" starring Warren William. William played Mason in three more entries, and then Ricardo Cortez took over in 1936 for "The Case of the Black Cat". "The Case of the Stuttering Bishop", made the following year, was the sixth and final of the series, with Donald Woods in the lead role, and after that, the next Perry Mason on screen would be Raymond Burr in the classic 1960s TV series! Reportedly, Erle Stanley Gardner did not like Ricardo Cortez's performance, so this was his only time as Perry Mason (which is ironic, because many fans of the genre feel that Cortez was excellent!). Also, note that Mason's detective assistant had been called "Spudsy Drake" prior to this movie, but here he was now "Paul Drake", which remained his name for many decades! Finally, note that the original director of the movie was Alan Crosland, but he died during filming, and he was replaced by William C. McGann. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster! In addition, posters for this movie are incredibly rare from ANY country (we have an image of the U.S. one-sheet in our archive, so we know what it looks like, but we never auctioned it, and we have never auctioned any other poster from any country! We don't know what would account for this incredible rarity, but maybe it is related to the fact that it is a Perry Mason movie, and maybe Erle Stanley Gardner fans purchased them many years go, and that's why they vanished! Also note that we are not sure what country this poster is from! In the past, we have had a few similar posters (in layout and size), and because they had Spanish writing, but were clearly NOT from Spain, we labeled some of these unknown Spanish language posters as being "South American", and no one has ever been able to zero in on a specific country. We think it is unlikely this poster is from Argentina, Venezuela, or Colombia, which would leave one of the other South American or Central American countries. This poster somewhat resembles Mexican "export" posters, but it can't be one of those, because those were solely made for Mexican movies being exported elsewhere. If anyone knows more about what country this poster is from, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking?
