eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result y197 CHARLIE CHAN IN BLACK MAGIC linen Argentinean movie poster '44 Date Sold 9/14/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Argentinean Movie Poster (measures approximately 29" x 43") (Learn More) Charlie Chan in Black Magic, the 1944 Phil Rosen detective mystery crime thriller ("Suggested by Earl Derr Biggers Character") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role "as Charlie Chan"), Mantan Moreland, Frances Chan (she was "Miss Chinatown" in Los Angeles, and she played Chan's "Number One Daughter" in place of the usual son!; she had a few minor appearances in other movies, but then retired to get married and had four children!), Joseph Crehan, Helen Beverly, and Jacqueline deWit. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: This Argentinean poster measures approximately 29" x 43" and is linenbacked. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). OR you can't see the restoration because it was so well done, but the poster had fairly significant defects. OR no restoration was performed, but the defects are not major, and restoration could be done to the poster without re-backing it. See below for its pre-restoration defects (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). poster has small holes at the crossfolds and minor smudges and creases throughout, as well as some tears on some foldlines. there are border defects, including pinholes all around the edges of the poster (within the edges of the image background). The poster is well linenbacked but the person who did so pretty much just mounted the poster and left the minor defects alone. They are not very noticeable or distracting, but if they bother the new owner of the poster, a talented restorer could touch them up without rebacking the poster. Learn More about condition grades
