Date Sold 10/31/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #1 (The Purple Death) Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14 1/4" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Captain America, the 1944 Elmer Clifton & John English Marvel Comics (at the time known as "Atlas Comics"!) comic book superhero crime fighting fantasy serial ("Based on the Character appearing in Captain America Comics"; "A Republic Serial in 15 Chapters") starring Dick Purcell (in the title role as Captain America; he died just a few months after shooting finished), Lorna Gray, Lionel Atwill, Charles Trowbridge, George J. Lewis, and John Hamilton. Note that this was the very first Marvel Comics character to be turned into a movie, and we don't know how faithful the adaptation was (in the movie, Captain America uses a gun, and we don't remember him ever doing that in the comics!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only once before auctioned a chapter 1 scene that shows Dick Purcell in costume (a different scene from this one), and that one auctioned for $322 in "good" condition! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: very good. The card had paper loss above the left of the "P" of "CAPTAIN" in the title, but it did not affect the letter, and there was a small tear and tiny paper loss above the "I" of "AMERICA". There was small paper loss in three areas in the left blank border and a small amount in the yellow background. Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card (meaning they backed the card onto a gel material) and they then performed excellent restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the card still exactly looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the card displays really well! When the card was restored, it caused it to slightly "stretch", and it now measures 11" x 14 1/4". One could certainly leave it as it is, or one might choose to trim 1/8" from the left and right blank borders to get it back to 14". Learn More about condition grades
