A 1953 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Out of the Past (released in other English-speaking countries as "Build My Gallows High"), the classic 1947 Jacques Tourneur romantic love triangle revenge crime film noir thriller ("A Man - Trying to run away from his past... A Woman - Trying to escape her future!" "'Don't try to get rid of me for another woman... ...it won't work!"'; based on the novel 'Build My Gallows High' by Daniel Mainwaring; a great story of a private investigator who is hired by a gangster to find his missing mistress, and he does so, but then he falls for her, and starts a romance with her, even though he knows he is likely signing his death warrant) starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas (in his third movie role!), Rhonda Fleming, Richard Webb, Steve Brodie, Dickie Moore, Virginia Huston, Paul Valentine, and Ken Niles NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that after Kirk Douglas achieved great success in the early 1950s, this classic film noir movie was re-released to theaters in 1953, and Kirk Douglas was given deservedly equal billing to the other three stars in the credits, and his image was added to the bottom of the posters. Certainly, posters from this very early re-release are at least as scarce as those from the original release, and maybe even more difficult to find (and we have not auctioned another example of this poster in 15 years)! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. One half of the top blank border was trimmed off, as was 1" of the bottom blank border (below the tiny printing and numbers, but slightly affecting that area, including the first "5" of the "53/524" NSS number). The poster had pinholes around the edges and tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, with some creases and scuffs on parts of some folds, and a few stains in the lower right, including one in the "t" of "Past". Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well, but the restorer did not replace the tiny first "5" of the NSS number (surely no one will notice that, but certainly, any restorer could easily replace it without re-backing the poster, and at minimal cost).
