An Unfolded Commercial Poster (made to be sold directly to the public; measures 23" x 29" [58 x 74 cm]) (Learn More) Graphic Masters EC Cover Posters, the 1971 set of two commercial posters created by Ron Barlow, who had been in charge of the "Big E.C. Book" for Woody Gelman. He became friends with Bill Gaines, past publisher of E.C. Comics and current publisher of Mad Magazine, and Bill showed him the original artwork for the two E.C. covers that had to be censored before they could be printed, because they were too graphic. These were Tales from the Crypt #38 and The Vault of Horror #32. Ron convinced Bill to let him create full color 20" x 28 1/2" posters of the uncensored versions of these two covers, and they were published in 1971 by Ron's Graphic Masters company! They were sold through fanzines and at comic shows, and they are difficult to find, especially in nice condition! Artist: Jack Davis Important Added Info: This is a very rare uncut printer's test poster (often referred to as a "printer's proof") that we have never auctioned before (and we have auctioned only two examples of the "regular poster")! Before a poster was printed in large quantities, the printer would print a limited number of posters as "test" posters. Because they needed to be shown to people at the studio, people in the art department, the stars, etc, they would print a number of test posters and distribute them to these people. Some of them would be fully trimmed, but often they would leave the color chart on the left edge of many of the posters, which added an extra inch to the width of the poster (which explains why the poster measures 23" x 29" [58 x 74 cm]). Once these printer's test posters were shown to the various people in a position to "OK" them, the printer would print the full print run of the posters. Not only is a printer's test poster far more rare than a regular poster, but it is also 100% genuine as there is no fear of purchasing a reproduction! Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. There is some slight discoloration at upper left (see our image). It is otherwise in pretty nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
