An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Blue Dahlia, the classic 1946 George Marshall romantic crime murder film noir ("Double Dame Trouble! Double-Barreled Action!"; "Double-dame trouble on his hands... and a murder mob at his throat!"; "One's out to frame him... the other to tame him!"; "With 3 famous 'finds' from 'The Lost Weekend'"; "Written by Raymond Chandler"; "Produced by John Houseman"; Ladd is a veteran just back from the war who finds his wife having an affair, and she is murdered, and he is naturally the lead suspect; he gets the ex-wife of his wife's new lover, played by Lake, to help him, and together they solve the crime) starring Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, William Bendix, Howard da Silva, Doris Dowling, Frank Faylen, Tom Powers, Vera Marshe, Hugh Beaumont, and Walter Sande. Note that while many of Raymond Chandler's works were adapted to movies, this was the only one that Chandler wrote directly as a movie! Also note that by 1946, Alan Ladd had become a very top star, so on the advertising for this movie, his image dominates the posters, with Veronica Lake in the background, whereas when "This Gun For Hire" was released 4 years earlier, Ladd was pretty unknown, and Lake dominates the advertising for that movie (although Ladd does appear on the posters)! Also, note that a year after this film was released, a woman was murdered and newspapers dubbed it "The Black Dahlia" case in a morbid twist on this film's title. The poster had been trimmed on all four borders (the person who did the trimming only cut off parts of the blank borders, being careful to not affect the small writing at the bottom, and especially to not affect the part of Bendix's hair that extends into the blank border) and it was folded an extra time. There was small paper loss at the bottom center crossfold and some tiny paper loss at a few other crossfolds. There were smudges and scuffs in the extra foldline running down the top of Lake's blouse at right. There was a Y-shaped tear with tiny paper loss at the junction of the "Y" in the bottom of Lake's blouse and in the cigarette smoke. There was a 1" tear in the left of the middle foldline in Bendix's coat. The top 2" of the poster was folded over at one time. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Some amateur restorer linenbacked it, adding false borders around the edges (but it is pretty noticeable that they are not the original borders), and they did not leave any excess linen. They did fairly amateurish touch up to the defects described above. While this poster has very real defects, it is also true that the image area does not have many defects (as described above, and even the small writing at the bottom was not affected by the borders being trimmed). If I owned this great poster, I would certainly have a talented restorer remove it from the linen and have it properly re-backed and restored, after which it would look great, and it will not require a lot of paint restoration within the image area, and the blank borders can be replaced so that they are not very noticeable at all.
