Terence Young's Mayerling, the 1968 (released in the U.S. in 1969) Terence Young English/French doomed lovers royalty romantic melodrama ("No one woman could satisfy him.. Until he fell in love."; "His world could crumble... Lives could be destroyed... Fortunes could be squandered... Nothing mattered but those incredible moments in her arms!"; "From the novel by Claude Anet and historical documentation, and 'The Archduke' by Michael Arnold"; based on the real life story of Crown Prince Rudolf of Germany, who meets a beautiful young girl after he is forced into a loveless marriage, and he carries on an affair, but the girl is taken away and he becomes an alcoholic, and he finds her, and tries to marry her, and they are not allowed to, so they spend one last night together in Mayerling, and then commit suicide) starring Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve, James Mason, Ava Gardner (billed as "and as The Empress Elizabeth Ava Gardner"), James Robertson Justice, Genevieve Page, Andrea Parisy, and Ivan Desny. Note that there were two earlier versions of this movie, one in 1936 with Charles Boyer and Danielle Darrieux and one in 1952 with Jean Ayme and Denise Benoit.
